Meet the Animals - Cats

Toby the one-eyed cat

TobyToby had been abandoned in a rural area of Montana, left to fend for himself. When he was finally rescued, he was bone-thin and his fur was matted. He ended up at a small local shelter.

The shelter staff took one look at this one-eyed cat with a mangled ear and promptly nicknamed him 'Frankenstein.' Then they e-mailed us, asking if we could take him. Given his appearance, they considered him unadoptable.

We're not sure what happened to Toby, because the entire right side of his face - even his lower lip - seems to have gone through a buzz saw. He may have been attacked by a dog or coyote, or suffered some kind of horrible accident and miraculously survived.

His remaining eye is completely and permanently dilated. He has some vision left, but not much, and the prognosis for avoiding blindness is not good.

The first time Steve picked him up, Toby reached out with his paws, wrapped himself around Steve's neck, and began purring. Toby wouldn't let go. He was just so happy to be held and loved again.

Toby is a sweet, gentle guy who is now safely at home in the sanctuary's cat house.
